A nephew of ours participated in his preschool Olympics running the fifty meter race. Instead of running he walked the entire race and came in last place. When asked why he didn’t run, he answered, “Everyone is getting the same award, regardless of what place they come in.” And effectively, every single child received the same medal regardless of how well he or she did. I asked the principal why the school gave out medals to every single child. She answered, “Parents demand that every child receive an award.” I asked a school parent if this was fair, and she replied, “Yes, imagine if my son runs and comes in last place, and only the winners receive medals and my son doesn’t. He could be traumatized.” Children need to be traumatized a little! Parents wrongly create an unreal world where every child is a winner even though he or she hasn’t accomplished anything.
